Someday you may be preparing to enter a collage or a university, and then you will become very interested in what each place has to offer and why you should try to go to one rather than another.

The main difference between a college and a university is that the university usually includes a number of colleges. Many institutions pretend to be universities when they are not. On the other hand, some colleges are more like universities.

The term “college” originally meant any society or union of persons who took part in common activity or work. That’s why the cardinals who elect the Pope at Rome are called the “College of Cardinals.” But when people say college, they usually mean an institution where you can study after graduation from high school, and one that gives general, rather than highly specialized or technical training.

A college and a university differ in that the university includes special colleges or schools. These special colleges give instructions in professions such as law, medicine, music, and so on. Sometimes students go to college first, and then study at a university for a higher degree.
